Proving you live in the ACT
To apply for some Access Canberra services, you need to prove you live in the ACT.
Documents you can use as proof
You can use documents to prove you live in the ACT.
The documents you choose must:
- show your current ACT home address
- include your full name
- not be more than 4 months old, unless you use your current ACT driver licence.
You will need to show either:
- 1 document from group A
- 2 documents from group B
Group A documents
You can use 1 of the following to prove you live in the ACT:
- your current ACT driver licence
- a Department of Defence Address Confirmation Minute with your Department of Defence identity card
- a bill, welcome letter or bundle advice for your home electricity, gas, water, telephone or internet
- a letter or document from an Australian, state or territory government department. It must be about your home address.
Examples of letters or documents about your home address include:
- Rates Assessment Notice from ACT Revenue Office
- lease agreements from real estate agents; private agreements are not accepted
- Development Approval letter from ACT Planning
- Food Business Registration Certificate (to operate a home-based food business) from ACT Health Protection Service.
Group B documents
You can show us 2 of the following to prove you live in the ACT:
- official letter or account statement from a bank
- a letter or document from an Australian, state or territory government department.
Examples of letters or documents you can use include:
- Centrelink Card that has your address
- Department of Veterans Affairs Concession Card
- MyGov electronic correspondence that includes your address.
Showing us your documents
Your documents can be digital or paper versions.
If you're applying online or by post
You can use copies of your documents. You do not need certified copies.
If you're applying in person
You must bring original documents to an Access Canberra Service Centre.
Other ways to prove where you live
If you do not have the documents you need, you can provide:
- a statement from your employer
- a statement from your school, university or TAFE
- a declaration (written statement).
Provide a statement from your employer
The employer statement must be on your employer’s letterhead and include:
- the businesses registration number (ABN, ACN)
- full name, daytime contact number and signature of a person authorised to sign on behalf of your employer
- your full name and home address.
You cannot complete your own statement even if you are authorised to sign on behalf of your employer.
Provide a statement from your school, university or TAFE
The statement must be on your school's letterhead and include:
- the full name, daytime contact number and signature of a person authorised to sign on behalf of the school
- your full name, date of birth, home address and student identification number.
To support this statement, you will need to show your current student identity card.
Complete a declaration (written statement)
You can get a declaration form from an Access Canberra Service Centre.
To complete a declaration, you'll need another person who:
- can prove they live in the ACT
- will sign the declaration form to say you live in the ACT
- is 18 years or older.
Both parties will need to attend a Service Centre together to sign the statutory declaration.
